Staff Highlight: Bekah Moilanen

🎶 Meet Bekah 🎶

Now that we have introduced our newest staff member, we will be highlighting all of our staff in order of seniority. That means that Bekah is up!

Bekah has been at Harmony Garden off and on since 2011 – she has held many different roles in her time here but currently she serves as our music therapist specializing in eldercare as well as being the music therapy internship supervisor when we have interns. Bekah pours her all into every session that she leads and it is evident how much she loves and cares for the families that she serves. Not only does she spend countless hours planning sessions and learning new music for clients, but she also ensures that all her co-workers feel valued and keeps track of everyone’s birthdays. We value Bekah as an employee, co-worker, and friend and are so lucky to have her on our team.

Q: If you could have lunch with any musician in history, who would it be?

A: Rich Mullins

Q: What is something you love to do outside of work?

A: Explore Michigan beaches and rock hunt with my family and friends.

Q: What inspired you to explore music therapy?

A: I studied trumpet performance at MSU and after three years of hard work, decided that, even though I loved music, it wasn’t for me. I couldn’t see myself traveling all the time away from my family and spending hours a day in a practice room by myself. I left and went to nursing school where I could get a degree that would help people. When I heard about music therapy and what it was, I knew it was the perfect mix of both worlds and jumped in immediately!

Q: What’s your favorite part of your job?

A: My favorite part of being a music therapist are the relationships I build with people through the music we make together. It has been a true honor and privilege to play a small role in the lives of so many amazing people over the past 20 years of my career.
