Spring Song Fun! Songs For Early Childhood And Music Therapy

I live in Michigan, where winter sometimes feels like it won’t end. I’m ready. Ready to shed the snow and cold to make room for mud, sunshine, warmth, and some time outdoors! It’s also time to switch to some SPRING SONGS for music sessions and groups!

So, let’s talk about fun Spring  Songs for use in early childhood music and music therapy sessions! Here are some of my favorites!

1. Going On A Walk – Jaime Lawrence, MT-BC
I wrote this song as part of a songwriting challenge for music therapists a few years ago. It’s a fun song that allows children to use frog guiros, canary sticks, quack sticks, and other instruments that could sound like an insect or animal they would see outside in the spring.

Lyrics to the chorus:
“When you go out on a walk,
Be real quiet and don’t talk.
You never know what you will hear,
So listen up and have no fear!”

2. Mmm Aah Went the Little Green Frog – Nursery Rhyme by Susie Tallman

This version on YouTube is cute. I learned it slightly different, but I like the extra fish verse in this song!

3. Rainbow Round MeComposer unknown (please let me know if you can find the answer to this!)

This song is wonderful for learning colors, exploring a child’s imagination when it comes to what is outside the window in the spring time. Things like the blue sky, white clouds, purple flowers, yellow bee etc. I have rainbow streamers from Bear Paw Creek that are a perfect addition to the movement and dance for this song.

4. Mr. Sun – Raffi

Who doesn’t like a good Raffi children’s song?! This song is fun to encourage hand movements. I often sing the words a few times, then switch to syllables with the melody and play sticks, yellow egg shakers, or balls.

Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun
Please shine down on me
Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun
Hiding behind a tree

These little children are asking you
To please come out so we can play with you
Oh, Mr. Sun, Sun, Mr. Golden Sun
Please shine down on me.

5. Instrument Exploration to Classical Music – Vivaldi’s Four Seasons – Spring is a good place to start with your listening and exploring!

We pass out a variety of soft, spring sounding instruments. Canary sticks, chimes, hanging chimes, bells. You can also create a storm using rain sticks, ocean drums, and thunder tubes too. Search around and find a good classical song that promotes the sound of a storm or rain. I like to use “Drip Drip Drop, Little April Shower” from Disney’s Bambi. The options are endless!

Thanks for checking out our recommendations! I look forward to hearing your ideas! Happy Spring everyone!
