Lullaby: The Why and The What
Lullabies are incredibly important when your little ones are infants. Why? Because babies are born with the ability to differentiate between everyday speech and singing, and they actually prefer the singing! If you think about it, babies don’t yet have the language to communicate through words so it only makes sense that they connect more to pitches, melody, and song. Babies themselves communicate using different tones and cadences – think of how you can probably tell the difference between a hungry cry and a tired cry. This is why singing lullabies to your little one is so important. It further builds the bond between caregiver and infant while communicating to your little one that they are safe and loved.
Now let’s talk about the “what”: as in, what songs should I sing? I know that when we’re in a pinch, it’s sometimes hard to think of lullabies. We probably all automatically think of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and get stuck in a rut. Harmony Garden for that reason has put together a lullaby playlist on our YouTube channel. Use it to remind yourself of other lullabies, learn new ones, and also as a tool to put in the background for your sleeping little one. Here’s one of our favorites:
