As adults age, many become increasingly affected by social-isolation and loneliness which, according to the National Institute for Aging and the National Institutes for Health, can lead to or intensify a plethora of negative physical, cognitive, and emotional effects including weakened immunity, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and a sense of purposelessness.
Music — particularly familial or community music making — powerfully combats these effects by promoting meaningful activity, encouraging socialization, elevating mood, providing purpose, and releasing endorphins into the bloodstream and brain.
In the wake of Covid-19, Harmony Garden is offering telehealth music therapy services as a way to connect adults with their elderly parents who may be isolated at home or in facilities around the country. This unique service is open to multiple family members, regardless of location, who have access to either a computer with video and microphone capacities, a tablet, or smartphone, or anyone who wants to listen in audio-only on a landline!
No musical background or “talent” is required!
