Harmony Garden Music Therapy Services runs ability-focused music therapy groups for all children. The groups focus on improving children’s confidence, socialization, and communication while creating a foundation for lifelong music learning. We service groups in Jackson, Calhoun (Battle Creek/Marshall), Kalamazoo, Lenawee, Hillsdale, and Washtenaw (Dexter/Chelsea) counties in Michigan.

Music therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals of all ages and abilities.  Music therapy has proven itself to be beneficial within early childhood and preschool programs like yours. You can learn more about music therapy here.

We believe in the power of music and using it to connect people together.

Music therapy can support:

  • Opportunities for appropriate social interaction with peers

  • Awareness of self and awareness of others

  • Gross and fine motor movement and coordination
  • Expressive communication development (articulation, speech, rhythm, social communication, etc)
  • Cognitive and academic skills

  • Self-esteem and confidence in skills

Preschool Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) Classes

Music Therapy groups with Harmony Garden run for 45 minutes in all early childhood settings. Groups typically consist of 12-18 children; this number allows for better therapeutic outcomes and participation within the group setting. We ask that teachers and support staff participate in the groups alongside the children, this helps the staff learn methods for using musical interventions in the classroom when the therapists are not present. The groups focus on non-musical goals such as increasing self-expression, socialization, appropriate peer interactions, increasing language skills (verbal and non-verbal), and behavior management.

Early Childhood (Infant, Toddler, PreK or Preschool) Classes

Music Therapy groups run for 45 minutes in all early childhood settings, no matter the age of the children. Groups typically consist of 12-18 children; this number allows for better therapeutic outcomes and participation within the group setting. We ask that teachers and support staff participate in the groups along side the children, this helps them to learn methods for using musical interventions in the classroom when the therapists are not present. The groups focus on non-musical goals such as increasing self-expression, socialization, appropriate peer interactions, increasing language skills (verbal and non-verbal), and behavior management.

  • These classes are funded typically by program development funds within the facility. Occasionally parents may opt into music therapy and pay a minimal extra amount in their tuition to cover the cost. If grant funds are available, we will help provide information necessary to help with this process.
